Feline Fun Fact: According to NPR, the roughness that’s associated with the cat’s tongue, called the papillae, is primarily used for grooming purposes. They use the papillae to penetrate their fur layer to reach the skin, and coat the roots of the hair in saliva. This helps keep them clean, and the more fur, the harder it is to reach this area, such as the Persian cat, who’s fur can get matted easily and brushed often.

Fun Fact: According to Animal Path, this breed can be taught to do all the tricks that a dog can. They are very smart, and it is often best to train them by using a clicker. This allows them to associate the clicks with a reward when completing the desired task.

Fun Fact written by Faith Molitor

Fun Feline Fact: Although many people are drawn to Scottish Folds, their outwards appearance comes at the expense of their long-term health. According to BBC News, their folded ears are due to a mutation in their genes that negatively impacts their cartilage and leads to shorter, more difficult lives.

Fun Fact: Encyclopedia Britannia says that cats avoid water because they are used to living in areas where it is hot and there is very little rain/wet. They don’t know much about the water and how it works, but they do know that it does weird things to their fur.

Fun Fact written by Dylan Freidman

Fun Fact: According to MentalFloss, a potential reason cats like to sit in the sun is to regulate body temperature. Cats tend to have a higher average temperature (100.4°F-102.5°F) than humans (98.6°F). When the cat sleeps, its body temperature lowers due to its metabolism slowing down to try and conserve energy. While they can use energy to warm back up, they might also let the sun do it for them.

Our Writers

Hi y’all! Welcome to the Cat Colloquium Blog!

We are a non-profit that was created in order to educate those about the things that go into permanently adopting a feline friend. Each Friday, we will be posting a story on one of our staff members/volunteers/leaders and one of the cats. These posts will tell you a little bit about each of the cats as well as a perspective from a day in the life of one of the cats. We will also be listing some fun facts about cats in general, answering some of the general questions such as why cats purr, where each breed comes from, etc. We hope you all enjoy our blog, and we hope that this entertains you until you can come in and interact with the cats. See y’all soon!
